This is NEW BRUTALISM's first release in the seven inch format, and HIT SELF DESTRUCT's first in any. NEW BRUTALISM, who consist of former members of THE RED SCARE and AUTONOMY VS. SHAME, play angular and unrelenting Chicago style rock comparable to SHELLAC. On the flip side is the debut from California's HIT SELF DESCTRUCT. Their callous style of rock bears resemblance to RYE COALITION, TRANSISTOR TRANSISTOR, and THE PANTHERS, but with a more bitter and unglued approach.

REVIEWS:
Collective Zine (Andy Malcolm)
It's been a while since I've heard the New Brutalism. I am pretty sure I have a 12" by these dudes somewhere and that I rather enjoyed it. Not that I really had any clue as to what type of music I was listening to. And I still don't. Their song on this grey slip of wax is a bass heavy and mathematical rock extravaganza. All deep tones and complex guitar work with yelled vocals and a song that ends all of a sudden. I think I enjoyed it. Yeah. It makes me think of Tonie Joy's stuff like UOA and the Great Unravelling. All brain bashing oddity and obtuseness. Interesting, but probably not the ideal thing to listen to after a couple of beers. Do you see? Hit Self Destruct are not remotely familiar to me, but I really enjoyed this track. They also indulge in complex guitars and yelled vocals, but without the imposing crunch and boom of their flipside chums, Self Destruct are a tad more ear friendly. The guitars convulse and explode rhythmically as the band gets their groove on and summon up the devil that is a bit Boys Life-y now that I come to think of it. Very toe-tapping and enjoyable. Ok. That's that. This is a Way solid split like a wall of noisy bricks.
Heartattack issue #39 (David Hall)
side a is hit self destruct, for fans of the '90s. four hundred years, griver, uoa, and milemarker (pre frigd forms). the song is great and the melody is great. side b is new brutalism. this is for fans of shellac. i can't believe how similar this sounds to shellac. real rough, noisy, and bouncy. its really rockin'. nothing new on this 7", but a good listen.
